Telecommunication and Information Society Week has started

Today, the forth year consecutively, the Telecommunication and Information Society Week has started in the Republic of Moldova and continues its activities from May17 to May 22. Mr. Vladimir Filat, Prime Minister, participated at the inauguration ceremony of the IV-th edition of the Telecommunication and Information Society Week in Moldova and congratulated representatives of the information and communication technologies on occasion of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day and Telecommunication and Information Society Week in the Republic of Moldova.

During the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Alexandru Oleinic, the Minister of Information Technologies and Communication mentioned that this year the role of the Week is very important, because the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the whole society relies on information and communication technologies for a durable economic and social development.

The Minister presented a review of the last performances in the field of information and communication technologies, specifying that in the last years, the ICT field maintained a dynamics of stable development and enjoyed a considerable amount of investments. The annual incomes of the ICT field in 2009 reached 6 bln. lei, nearly 10% from GDP.

At the end of 2009, over 1 200 enterprises of the ICT field were registered, nearly 13 thousand persons were employed within these enterprises, with a monthly salary of 6,1 thousand lei – one of the biggest salaries in the economy of the country. The total number of subscribers, connected to fix telephony networks operators reached 1,14 mln. at the end of 2009, that is 32 fixed telephones per 100 inhabitants. The achievements of mobile telephony operators are impressive: the total number of connections reached 2,7 mln., that is 80 mobile telephones per 100 inhabitants. Nearly one third from the total number of households have computers and 27 % have access to Internet. Computer penetration within business sphere is more advanced – thus, two of three enterprises use computers, the majority of them using Internet as well.

At the end of the inauguration ceremony of the ICT Week, Mr. Vladimir Filat, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, defaced two fix stamps with postage envelopes, one of them being issued on the occasion of marking 120 years since bringing into operation of the first telephony station in Chisinau with a capacity of 300 lines and the second – on the occasion of marking 20 years since the creation of the first ministry, responsible for information and communication technologies.
