During a meeting with the represented of mass-media in the SE “SIRC “Registru”, headed by Mr. Alexander Oleinic, Minister of Information Technologies and Communication, journalists got familiarized with new amendments included in the Law on identity documents of the National Passport System. Beginning January 1, 2011 the Republic of Moldova citizens will be issued only biometric passports. This requirement is established and financed by the Project of the European Union “Biometric passport for Moldova”, which provides for allocation of 2 million Euro in modernization of the infrastructure for manufacturing, issuance and processing of biometric passports.
The journalists had possibility to trace the stages of production and issuance of biometric passports, to talk to citizens from documentation office and to find out their opinion about the new law and new conditions of serving. After an excursion in the Section of production, there was held a round table.
Mr. Alexander Oleinic said that biometric passport is one of the most protected documents, issued according to the requirements of the ICAO for border crossing and is accepted and recognized by the EU in the process of migration. “A biometric passport contains a chip with holder’s biometric data, fingerprint, digital photo and signature. This makes passports highly protected and excludes their falsification, the fact that allows their utilization in foreign countries”, added Mr. Oleinic.
Thus, beginning January 1, 2011, the Republic of Moldova citizens will be issued only biometric passports with 7 years validity term, and children under 7 years old will be issued biometric passports with 3 years validity term. Non-biometric passports issued until January 1, 2011, will be valid till their expiry date. Most countries implement this passport system for protecting their citizens from terrorism and for monitoring the migration process.
First biometric passports have been put into operation in February, 2008. Till present 1529 biometric passports have been issued.
