Determination of an information exchange mechanism for combating illegal migration in the Republic of Moldova

The illegal migration is one of the most serious problems the world community faces nowadays. The phenomenon of false and forged travel documents usage occurs all aver the world.

The Republic of Moldova also suffers from this problem, as both state of origin and transit state. Thus, the Republic of Moldova became the beneficiary of the Project: “Consolidation of capabilities and cooperation in identification of false and counterfeit travel documents at the Moldova-Romania border”, financed by the European Union. The Project assists the Republic of Moldova in combating illegal migration by consolidation of capabilities of consular, migratory and frontier bodies in identification of false and counterfeit travel documents.

According to the plan of elaboration and implementation of the Project and at request of the International Center for Migration Policy Development, on February 23-25, 2010, the Workshop: “EU recommended practice and development of information exchange mechanism” was held within the State Enterprise “SIRC “Registru”. The Workshop brought together experts from the International Center for Migration Policy Development and EU mission on providing frontier assistance, representatives from EU member-states (Hungary, Slovakia, Holland, Finland) and the Republic of Moldova institutions (Border Service, Ministry of Information Technologies and Communication, Ministry of Internal Affairs and territorial subdivisions of the Border Service).

The Workshop main purpose consisted in encouraging cooperation by information exchange between agencies, involved in combating illegal migration, ensuring the effectiveness of the process of counterfeit travel documents identification.

The International Center for Migration Policy Development is an international organization, created in 1993 at initiative of Austria and Switzerland for providing modern specialized services in migration polices to states and corresponding organizations and bodies of these states, which take responsibility over elaboration and implementation of migration policies.
